Whether you’re taking the next step in your career or starting in an entirely new industry, the demand for jobs in the UK has soared. So, to give you the best chance at success, we’ve put together some top tips to help you leave a lasting impression on your future employer.
Your job application is the first opportunity for a Hiring Manager to get a sense of who you are and what you can bring to the team, so it’s important you make a great first impression.
A smart, well laid out CV will give you the best chance of success. Use simple in-built fonts and clear headings to separate different sections. Hiring Managers may see hundreds of CVs for just one position, so its vital key details are easy to find. For ease, we recommend using a pre-built CV template - You can download ours here.
Every employer will be looking for specific skills and requirements for their vacancies, so it’s important you tailor the information on your CV to each job you apply for. We often see CVs that cram everything into one document! - Do your research, carefully choose the most relevant details, and condense your CV to 2 pages or less.
Most applications will ask for a cover letter alongside your CV too. Use this as another opportunity to tell the employer why you’d be a great fit for the position; be specific, and again tailor your cover letter for each role you apply for. We recommend having a cover letter template that you can edit for each application. Keep it short and sweet, anything longer than 1 page is too long.
Before sending your application make sure you proofread it thoroughly even the slightest typo can reflect poorly. Fresh eyes can often spot small typos that you previously missed, so ask a friend or family member to check it for you too.

Phone and video interviews are becoming more and more common, but that doesn’t make interviewing for a job any less formal. You should still dress for the occasion, research the company, and practise your responses as you would for a face-to-face interview. Preparation is really important at the interview stage, especially in such a competitive job market.
Once your interview is over, you should follow up with a ‘thank you’ email a few days later. It’s a small touch that plenty of job seekers rarely consider, and another great way to stand out and leave a positive impression.
