Interviews are a daunting experience, no matter how many times you go through the process. To prevent the nerves and have the best chance at beating the competition, preparation is key. Here’s a few tips to help you get through your next interview!
Research is important – Taking time to research the organisation before your interview is vital. Showing you have taken the time to understand what the company is about and what they offer will leave a positive impression with the recruiter.
Plan ahead – Make sure to plan ahead before the day of the interview, and ensure you have all of the relevant details such as the time, date and location before the big day. Asking for the details at the last minute can make you seem disorganised! Make sure to note down the company’s contact details for emergencies as well, just in case you need to reschedule at the last minute.
Prepare for the day - Make a list of your strengths against the job description and read them out loud. This will help you become more confident at answering one of the most difficult questions you’re likely to face; ‘tell us your strengths and weaknesses’. We also recommend making a list of 5 questions you’d like to ask during the interview – this can make you seem eager for the role and stand out among your peers!
The interview pack – Don’t forget to bring key documents like your CV / portfolio, the job description, your references and relevant education certificates to the interview. If you’re unsure what you need to bring, don’t be afraid to ask before the interview.
Body language – Good body language can radiate confidence during your interview. This means shaking hands firmly with your interviewer, maintaining eye contact and holding a strong, upright posture throughout the interview; don’t forget to smile too!
Stick to the point - Keep your answers concise to avoid going off on a tangent. Give yourself time to think and collect your thoughts before answering a question. If you don’t have an answer to a question, be honest; the interviewer may give you some guidance!
Written thank you – Following on from the interview, send a ‘thank you’ email to the company, as it can leave a lasting positive impression! A simple ‘thank you’ is often overlooked by candidates, so why not stand out and send your thanks!
